The future of the main Star Wars film installments is in the hands of Simon Kinberg. Kinberg is known for a variety of projects, including 71 episodes of Star Wars: Rebels, Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and Deadpool 2 (2018). Not only is the creator firmly rooted in comic and sci-fi pieces, but he also has experience in the Star Wars universe; his connection to Star Wars, however, is much older. In an interview with Nerdtropolis, Kinberg spoke about his devotion to the franchise and his inspiration for the upcoming films.
Kinberg has been a life-long fan, “Star Wars was the thing for me when I was a kid. There are pictures of me all through childhood wearing Star Wars T-shirts and sweatshirts.” However, that love for the franchise went deeper than just appreciation. He explained, “When I was in the hospital for pneumonia, I woke up and my parents had left a little Lego Millennium Falcon on my chest to let me know everything was going to be OK. It’s the thing for me, and it always has been.”

On his trilogy of films itself, Kinberg stated, “It’s not even a dream come true—I couldn’t have dreamed it. Just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it.” He is firmly devoted both as a developer and a fellow fan.
The creator mentioned his inspiration for the trilogy, looking to one in-universe project in particular, “There’s a ton of wildly talented folks that want to do great work. I was super inspired and just sort of awestruck by what Tony Gilroy did with Andor. I thought that was about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.” Kinberg wrapped up his comments with a final statement of dedication, “I’ve always been enthusiastic about it. I always will be.”
Kinberg’s currently-untitled Star Wars films will be the next mainline trilogy in the Star Wars universe. It will move the story forward, past the Skywalker Saga and into the future of the franchise. While development is actively occurring for this project, a release window has not been named for the first of the three films.
