“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch…” Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to the 2000 How the Grinch Stole Christmas adaptation. Key players are in talks about returning, Jim Carrey is planned to return as the Grinch, while Ron Howard is on the path to once again direct and co-produce with Brian Grazer. Already onboard to write are Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, who had a varied career in comedy writing, including the notorious bomb The Cat in the Hat, but also successful television shows like Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Barry, Dave and Silicon Valley.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas was originally written in 1957 by Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. Upset about the commercialization of Christmas, Suess wrote a story about a grouch who tried to ruin it for everyone by stealing their presents, only to learn the true meaning of Christmas. CBS would later produce an animated special in 1957, starring Boris Karloff. In 2000, Universal and Imagine produced the live action film, starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch. Receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film was nevertheless a box office hit for the holidays, with all the “whos” down in Hollywood going to see it. What the sequel will be remains to be seen.
