Jimmy Kimmel Will Be Around A Bit Longer, Renews Contract With ABC

It appears Disney is more than happy to proceed with a mindset of water under the bridge when it comes to Jimmy Kimmel, as, according to a source for Reuters, the television network ABC (owned by Disney) has signed a one-year contract extension for Kimmel’s late-night show. The contract extends his time on the network until May 2027, with news of the deal apparently delayed out of respect for Stephen Colbert, a fellow late-night host whose show on CBS has been cancelled after a ten year run and is set to end in May of 2026.
This is the latest news in the saga of Kimmel on TV screens after Disney temporarily pulled his show off the air following comments by the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr. This was in the wake of Kimmel’s discussion of the death of Charlie Kirk, the comments described as “insensitive” by Disney, while Carr claimed Kimmel was misleading the public with his characterization of Kirk’s shooter. In truth, the commentary was fairly banal, and the network’s reaction produced a swell of support for Kimmel that quickly led Disney to backtrack.

Carr, meanwhile, is currently set to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee later this month after legislators from both American political parties critiqued his pressure on broadcasters to remove Kimmel from the air. Carr has denied that he applied any pressure.
It is unlikely there will be any more major news with regards to Kimmel and the FCC, but the testimony before the Senate might reignite the discussion around the FCC’s role and the powers they should wield concerning TV and censorship.
