On the first day of Star Wars Celebration, the opening panel provided a first look at The Mandalorian & Grogu. With new and familiar faces from the world of The Mandalorian, the panel held several announcements for this new Star Wars film coming May 22, 2026. An animatronic Grogu was also brought on stage, and it is that mini Force user Steve Weintraub of Collider was curious about.

Catching up with Jon Favreau after the panel, Weintraub asked how Grogu had grown up since season three of The Mandalorian. Favreau stated, “You want to have a progression so it’s not just the same situation over and over again. So, on one front, the relationship between Mando and Grogu has evolved, as now he’s an apprentice, and now he’s a family member and adopted by him. As they go off, as it was said in the end of the last season, it’s his job to train him. They have to go out on adventures, and they have to work together.”

Grogu faced a choice during The Book of Boba Fett. He could stay with Luke Skywalker, continuing to be trained in the ways of the Force. Or return to Din Djarin. Grogu chose to return, solidifying the family of two. What that meant was explored during season three of The Mandalorian, and it seems to also be continuing with the movie. Favreau continued, “There’s an apprenticeship that’s happening between the two of them, but Grogu is becoming more comfortable, as remember, he was trained by none other than Luke Skywalker, and the path of the Force is a lifelong path. So, we want to have evolution. As the story gets bigger, the screen gets bigger, we want to have Grogu grow into that.”
