Kathleen Kennedy Indicates That Standalone Stories Are The Way Forward For 'Star Wars'

LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed a surprising path forward for the Star Wars franchise. Instead of working on more trilogies, the series will focus on standalone stories. Kennedy explained, “I really think that now we’re in a position where it’s broadened the possibility of stories and filmmakers we can bring in to tell stories that mean something to them – it doesn’t necessarily have to connect to every little thing that’s been done in Star Wars; it can actually be a standalone story that then builds into many, many other stories.”
This would give the series far more freedom to step away from the Skywalker saga, which has played a role in nearly every Star Wars project, including the ones most distanced from the Jedi. This also means these new stories are less bound by canon. The normal rules of the galaxy still apply, of course, but it doesn’t have to be about Luke, Anakin, or Rey’s experiences. Kennedy also confirmed that shooting for Star Wars: Starfighter is set to begin in September. She plans to remain in London to see the start of the process. Starfighter is currently scheduled for a May 28, 2027, release. The Mandalorian & Grogu will be released on May 22, 2026.
