It’s official, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from her role after 14 years. Kennedy began her career as a producer, and she will be returning to this focus full-time. To replace her, Dave Filoni will step up as Chief Creative Officer and President, and Lynwen Brennan will serve as Co-President on the business end of operations. Kennedy will continue to work with Lucasfilm as a producer for its films, including The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026), as well as Star Wars: Starfighter (2027).  In an exit interview with Deadline, Kennedy discussed her plans and what she looks forward to as a producer once again.

When asked if she would make a return as Disney CEO, Bob Iger did. Kennedy was firm, “That is not happening here. I told everybody I would stick around a bit longer than I had intended, but I am so ready to go off and have the chance to make lots of movies.”  She expressed her desire to return to her roots and explore new avenues: “I want to do more movies, and I want the opportunity to get back to a kind of eclectic group of movies the way I used to.”

AI and its capabilities are something the producer is interested in as well.  Kennedy stated, “I am interested in exploring using those tools in responsible ways, and working out the complications around trying to figure out what we’re going to do in terms of protecting artists’ rights. That is vitally important.” She’s looking forward to its implementation as a general tool, “But at the same time, there’s nothing more exciting than having new tools that can expand on what you’re capable of doing in terms of creating visual language around stories.”

Kennedy’s time at Lucasfilm was extremely valuable to her development as a creative individual. “I find it fascinating to have now seen the business from all sides. I have a much deeper understanding for how decisions get made and why, and when things seem irrational or whatever, you understand what’s leading to that. “ On her future, Kennedy closed her comments with what makes her passionate, “What I love about making movies is you’re just in it, in the moment, and every decision you make in that moment will affect everything. I love the challenge of that, the excitement, the urgency of that. It’s just kind of thrilling all the time.”
