User-generated AI content may be coming to Disney+ in your home, according to Bob Iger’s statement on a quarterly conference call.
“Disney+ in the midst of rolling out the biggest and the most significant changes — from a product perspective, from a technology perspective — since we launched the service in 2019.”
Upcoming changes to Disney+ include games or “game-like features,” such as Disney’s partnership with Epic Games, which recently added The Simpsons to its flagship game, Fortnite. More importantly, Disney is promoting Gen AI short-form user-generated content (UGC), either developing its own software or possibly utilizing OpenAI’s Sora 2.
“The other thing that we’re really excited about, that AI is going to give us the ability to do, is to provide users of Disney+ with a much more engaged experience, including the ability for them to create user-generated content and to consume user generated content — mostly short-form — from others,” Iger continued.
Analysts of the recent announcement have raised some questions about the move, particularly Disney’s willingness to allow users to generate their own content using their IP, which Disney is usually fiercely protective of. Analysts have also questioned how Disney will protect its IP from inappropriate uses, as well as protect content creators. However, analysts have also suggested that, if this move is successful, it could provide a model for other studios and their IP to follow.
