The Marvel Cinematic Universe is massive and has been building for many years. Something with that much history leaves people to wonder where it could go, how it could continue, and if the stories are going to get predictable. The next section of the MCU has already kicked off, as Phases 4, 5, and 6 are considered the “Multiverse Saga.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige opened up about what’s happening now, and what’s to come for the MCU.

The title of this overall arc can be a bit misleading. Feige confirms that since “not every film in the Infinity Saga focused on the Infinity Stones or Thanos,” the same will be true for Phases 5 and 6. As we know, the overall build will come to a head at Phase 6’s Avengers: Secret Wars. There will be foundational aspects laid, but not every story will have the same repeating goal or motive.

Phase 4 was more of a transitional arc, ushering in the new era of the MCU. You have to take the time to build a proper finale for an arc, and you have to be flexible to follow where the story goes. Phase 5 is a similar situation; however, Feige stated that “in very generalized terms, as you see in Quantumania, it's about setting up the big overarching thread that will go through the next phases.”

With many core Avengers now departed, a new staple will be established. A Phase 6 project, Fantastic Four, will usher in just that. Regarding mutants, “Fantastic Four is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics,” making their proper position in the MCU something to watch. Feige confirms they “plan on that being a big pillar of the MCU going forward.”

Succinctly summing up what the future looks like without giving much away plot-wise, Feige stated:

“The storylines that weave together through Phase 5 and 6 and the opportunities that the multiverse brings storytelling-wise, it's a whole new aspect to the MCU.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania comes out on February 17th, kicking off Phase 5. This Phase will stretch into 2024, currently wrapping up with Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts.
