Netflix scored its first theatrical win this weekend with a limited event. For two days, movie theaters hosted a sing-along for the anime-inspired musical Kpop Demon Hunters, earning around $18 million. While it was the movie’s first time in theaters, Kpop Demon Hunters has been available on Netflix for about two months, taking over the social media world. Netflix stepping into theaters is quite unprecedented for them, especially since their brand is built on streaming at home. However, a limited theatrical run may have been an inspired marketing strategy, leading to new subscribers. The announcement of the sing-along version being released this past Monday on the streaming service seems to confirm this theory.
Kpop Demon Hunters focuses on a girl group of K-pop singers that hunt down demons. Their main antagonist is a rival boy group of demons known as the Saja Boys. The storyline and the music have captured North American fans with the movie climbing toward the No. 1 most-watched spot on Netflix and several songs holding their place in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 chart. According to Netflix Movie Chief Dan Lin, Netflix is always “looking for powerful new stories, refreshing new voices and daring new approaches.” He went on to praise Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans along with Kristine Belson and Sony Animation for the success of the film.
