Even if Marvel is not formally attending San Diego Comic-Con 2025, other divisions of Disney are absolutely making their presence known. One of the most prominent is Lucasfilm Animation, with a beautiful and fascinating display on the show floor with illustrations, models, and more from many of the company’s recent animated projects.
Perhaps most surprising are the plethora of new, or rather, old, art pieces sketched by Dave Filoni, whose skill with a pen has been noted in the past and seen through other drawings released on social media and in behind-the-scenes content. These new pieces cover a range of shows and characters, demonstrating the personal hand he has had in all animation over 20 years, even if he has slowly taken steps back and now splits his time between live action and animation.
Another surprise is the prominent appearance of Star Wars Resistance models and artwork. The show has a generally mixed perception among Star Wars fans and has seen limited acknowledgement over the years since its two-season run came to an end, but here, it is presented right alongside other productions as an equal part of the whole.
There are also teases about the future. A still from Maul - Shadow Lord gives us an excellent look at the ex-Sith in the new animation style chosen for the upcoming show, while a different still depicts Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger in Ahsoka Season 2. Dressed in a dark blue coat, with his beard shorn and his bright eyes twinkling, these images of Ezra and Maul show us the future of Star Wars animation, be it as a medium adapted for live action productions or as a medium for notable storytelling.
