There is no denying the love that die-hard fans have for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and the vast world and languages he created for Middle-earth through all his writings. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings both stand the test of time as being instrumental in bringing to life and adding to the genre of fantasy in books and film. Writers and storytellers look to Tolkien and the world-building he did for his stories as the absolute epitome of building a fantasy world. And the work that probably best exemplifies this is The Silmarillion, which, is now, reportedly, going to finally be made into a movie.

Any Tolkien fan will tell you that if you’re going to read the books, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are much easier than the prequel: The Silmarillion. Even though the writing isn’t technically difficult compared to some books, it’s the vast storytelling that takes place over hundreds of years and follows many elves, dwarves, and eventually humans, all with similar-sounding names at times, that makes this a hard book for people to read and understand. This, along with the fact that the Tolkien Estate has not given anyone the rights to adapt The Silmarillion to screen, is a major reason why we haven’t seen it yet, despite many people hoping to. That is, until now.

Recently reports came out of the second season of Amazon’s The Rings of Power being given special permission by the Tolkien Estate to use parts of The Silmarillion in the series. The Rings of Power covers much of the timeline of that book but focuses on the Second Age and the original battle with the Dark Lord Sauron. Fans all thought, based on the Tolkien Estate’s staunch hold on The Silmarillion rights, that we’d never see anything from that book on screen. Everything shown so far has been mentioned in only The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. However, with opening this up more, and allowing more rights, it seems as if the Tolkien Estate has changed its mind.

Now reports are coming in that fans just might be getting their wish. A movie based on The Silmarillion is in the works with none other than Peter Jackson (director of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) coming back to Middle-earth to direct it. It seems as if the success of Jackson’s movies, and The Rings of Power, has the Tolkien Estate reviewing the rights to Tolkien’s work and whether or not they will allow it on screen.

While this news may come as a shock to some, it is definitely something many fans, including Peter Jackson, have been waiting for. Jackson is quoted as saying “I have always wanted to work on The Silmarillion, to complete that story, and bring the origin of Middle-earth to screen, and now, getting the chance, it is so close to coming true.

Hopefully, more news will come in soon as fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of this film many of them never thought they’d see.
