Rae Carson's novelization of The Rise of Skywalker currently marks the end of the canon Star Wars timeline. This will change this October when Random House releases Star Wars: The Last Order by Kwame Mbalia.
The Young Adult novel takes place after the Battle of Exegol, when Finn and Jannah rescue a group of children kidnapped by the First Order from a space cruiser. Trying to find the First Order officer who is responsible for the abduction, the two former stormtroopers have to face their own demons as ex-soldiers of an oppressive regime that never hesitated to take advantage of children.
The Last Order will be Mbalia's first Star Wars novel, but it is not his storytelling debut in the galaxy far, far away. He wrote the short story "Fortuna Favors the Bold", collected in the anthology book From A Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Episode VI.
The author, who lives in North Carolina, is probably best known for his Tristan Strong series, where the titular character accidentally punches a hole into the Midpass. In this realm, ancient African gods clash with beings from African-American legends. For the first book, Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, he received a Coretta Scott King Author Honor award. Most recently, he wrote the children's book Captain America: Brave New World: A Hero Looks Like You, together with illustrator Nikkolas Smith.
Star Wars: The Last Order will be available as a hardcover book of 464 pages for $ 18.99, starting October 21, 2025.
