Video game movies have always been hit or miss. Or really, miss with a few little successes here and there. When it was revealed that we’d be getting an animated Super Mario Bros. movie, people were excited. After all, all we had for that before was Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper doing… something? And his hair? In any case, the animated film was released in 2023 to middling reviews from critics. However, with audiences, it was a grand slam, earning a 95% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a nearly 1.4 billion dollar box office on a budget of 100 million.

So it’s really unlikely that the studio cared that the critics weren’t blown away.

With a success like that, a sequel was inevitable, and not just because the end of the first film hinted at it. It has been confirmed that we will be getting the next installment on April 3rd, 2026. So far, nothing too concrete has been revealed, other than the main cast returning to reprise their roles. There are hints about what we could get, and Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that the film will dive deeper into the expansive Mario universe. Fans are hoping that it will mean we get to see fan favorite characters such as Daisy, Wario, and Waluigi.

Whatever the case may end up being, we have a set date for the next film.
