English primatologist Jane Goodall has died; she was 91 years old. As reported by the Jane Goodall Institute, “The Jane Goodall Institute has learned this morning, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, has passed away due to natural causes. She was in California as part of her speaking tour in the United States.” Known for her work with chimpanzees, Goodall was featured in more than 40 documentaries. Survived by her son, sister, and three grandchildren, the story of Jane Goodall will live on, as will her scientific research.

Goodall was born in Hampstead, London; she traveled to Kenya in 1957 as a protege of noted anthropologist Louis S.B Leakey. She soon came to prominence by discovering that chimpanzees were capable of making and using tools. She was also notable for naming the chimps she worked with, and seemed to be accepted by them as a member of their society. In 1977, Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute to support research into Chimpanzees and other Great Apes. Synonymous with the word “primatologist”, Jane Goodall would become a well-known figure, with numerous tributes to her appearing in the media. May she rest in peace.
