With The Flash heading into its ninth and final season at The CW, many wondered how it would handle its farewell tour. Over thirteen episodes, the show will not only wrap up its own storylines and characters but put a bow on the entire Arrowverse as the last show standing in the prime universe. Set photos and social media posts indicate they’re already doing so on both fronts.

First off, Javicia Leslie, who played Ryan Wilder on Batwoman, will be reprising the role following the show’s cancellation after three seasons. She had starred, taking up the mantle in the latter two seasons. While this is her return to The Flash, it is her first time playing her role in the proper timeline, as her previous guest appearance was exclusively in the dark timeline of the “Armageddon” event that kicked off last season. Not only that, but she’s playing the villainous Red Death, who in the comics is a Bruce Wayne doppelgänger on Earth-52. This Bruce grieved his loss of sidekicks so poorly he decided the Speed Force was his best option. He subdues that Earth’s Barry, driving them into the Speed Force using his Batmobile merged with the Cosmic Treadmill. This absorbs him and his powers. Comics are weird.

Also spotted was Paul Anthony, who played Rainbow Raider Roy Bivolo in two first-season episodes. Post-Crisis, he’s reported to have disappeared. This version is allied with Red Death, so he might be of whatever Earth Red Death originates from. In addition, there’s the Pied Piper, Hartley Rathaway (played by Andy Mientus), who had reformed from villainy again in season 6, post-Crisis, after his boyfriend and closest henchman’s volatile uncontrollable molecule vibration condition was cured. The gangster Goldface (played by Damion Poitier) is also returning and is last seen getting arrested after an attack on the Central City Police Department last season. And finally, Jaco Birch (played by Max Adler), known as The Hotness, was also last seen in season 8, cleared for fire-related crimes that ended up being Deathstorm’s doing. They all seem to be teaming up with the heroes.

The ninth and final season of The Flash is set to premiere in 2023. When exactly is currently unknown, as The CW has yet to release its midseason schedule.
