Steven Spira has almost finished a second term in his position at Warner Bros. Spira has announced that he will resign as their business affairs chief at the end of the year, before leaving the lot for good. This brings an end to a career that spanned more than 40 years, only briefly being interrupted by the AT&T merger, for those who remember that. Spira’s retirement does not seem to have been triggered by recent discussion about purchasing Warner Media, but it is important to bring this up as the discussion could change the fate of Warner Bros, for better or for worse.

Steven Spira first came to Warner Bros. in 1985. As business affairs chief, Spira oversaw various aspects of production and became skilled in “corralling and motivating talent and staff alike,” as Variety put it. Deals he was responsible for included long-term engagements with the likes of Clint Eastwood and Christopher Nolan, so we can probably thank him for The Dark Knight trilogy. It is not yet known who will replace him. Reports indicate they will wait a while to decide, but that they could come from Spira’s team. Whoever it ends up being, big changes are around the corner.
