Thor actor Chris Hemsworth recently shared a video, entitled “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor,” featuring a compilation of his film scenes as the mighty Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor, from his four solo MCU films, as well as the four Avengers films, behind-the-scenes footage, and interview segments. Along with news of his recent casting in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, some people are speculating that this may be Hemsworth’s and his iconic character’s final outing. He also wrote the following statement:
"Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Hemsworth writes. "For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable... Next up, Doomsday!"

While this statement does not appear to mean anything definitive regarding the future of his character, Hemsworth has previously made some other comments more directly suggesting that it may be time to retire his character:
"I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know... am I at that stage? Who knows?"
Hemsworth has starred as Thor in a whopping eight MCU films to date, including Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Additionally, he was one of the few major characters out of the Phase One MCU heroes to survive the apocalyptic events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which concluded with both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans retiring their characters of Iron Man and Captain America, respectively. Ironically, Hemsworth will be facing Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday as the titular nemesis.
If Avengers: Doomsday is indeed intended to be Thor’s “swan song,” Hemsworth will have left an incredible film legacy for himself and his character, with at least a grand total of nine MCU films under his belt and a legacy of fond memories! Avengers: Doomsday is tentatively slated for a December 2026 release date with yet another Avengers film, Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for the following year, in December 2027.
