The long-awaited prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes hit cinemas on 17th November and Lionsgate has high hopes for the adaptation of Suzanne Collin’s novel. They are expecting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to rake up around 50 million dollars in North America on its opening weekend, and 100 million internationally. This would put it ahead of Disney’s The Marvels which only managed to scrape 47 million in the United States over the same period. This might seem like a high bar but each of the previous Mockingjay movies hit triple digits.

The first Hunger Games made a massive 152 million in its initial few days. The adjusted expectations for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes are a stark reminder of the drop in audience figures, post-COVID.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes doesn’t appear to have much competition at the box office this week. Trolls Band Together and the horror film Thanksgiving take different segments of the market so the release couldn’t be timed better.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ reviews are currently mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes putting the film at 64%. The rating comes from 104 critics, averaging 3 stars. Audiences don’t necessarily agree with the professionals. Venom, The Sponge Bob Movie, and the entire Transformers franchise all managed just fine without any love from reviewers.

It’s been eight years since the last Hunger Games movie, and there’s still a lot of Suzanne Collin’s world left to explore. If The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is successful, it could expand even further. Tom Blythe, Rachel Zegler, and Peter Dinklage will be keeping their fingers crossed.
