The Hunger Games is getting a West End premiere as a brand-new stage production! The adaptation is based on Suzanne Collins’ hit young adult dystopian novel and the Lionsgate film. It reportedly has the author’s blessing as well. The play will follow a similar plot to the first book and movie, progressing through the violence of The Hunger Games as Katniss Everdeen fights for her life and the “hope of a nation oppressed by a ruthless Capitol.”

The creative team for this stage production is impressive.  Industry icon Conon McPherson adapted the story for the stage, and this isn’t his first book adaptation; McPherson co-wrote the Artemis Fowl adaptation for Disney+, among many career accomplishments. Matthew Dunster is the play's director, who also has book-to-stage adaptation experience. The rest of the crew includes set designer Miriam Buether, costume designer Moi Tran, choreographer Charlotte Broom, lighting designer Lucy Carter, sound designer Ian Dickinson, video designer Tal Rosner, fight director Kev McCurdy, John Maddox for Suspended Illusions, casting director Amy Ball, and production manager Gary Beestone, as of now.

This stage adaptation’s debut is currently set for the Fall 2024 theatre season. Specific show dates and the cast have yet to be announced; you can sign up for show updates on the West End Theatre’s production page. If you can’t make it out to London’s West End Theatre district for the show, there is another Hunger Games Universe project to watch. The movie adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel to the original story, hits theaters on November 17, 2023.
