The opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art was a star-studded occasion attended by several of George Lucas’s contemporaries, including Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Peter Jackson, and Francis Ford Coppola. Despite his numerous contributions to cinema, Lucas was apparently nervous about opening night. According to his wife, Mellody Hobson, he wasn’t sure if anyone would show up, but they did in huge numbers. The entire project took almost 17 years to complete and was the main focus of George Lucas’s life after he sold Lucasfilm to Disney. It honors the tradition of visual storytelling in a 300,000-square-foot building that houses over 40,000 works across various media, including artwork behind George Lucas’s films. A potential deal to build the Lucas Museum in various American cities was rejected until Los Angeles was finalized as its chosen home. In a passionate speech, Lucas declared that it’s up to us to decide what is art. He said, “I believe it wholeheartedly that you get to decide what art is.”

Lucas has always faced pushback from critics for his films, his direction, and his ideas in general, and this museum was no exception. Among the Star Wars names in attendance were Mark Hamill, Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Harrison Ford. The Mandalorian and Grogu director Jon Favreau, Lucasfilm co-President Dave Filoni, composer Ludwig Göransson, and Bryce Dallas Howard. Lucas was seen talking animatedly with Christopher Nolan and posing with Guillermo Del Toro. Now that the museum has opened its doors, it belongs ot the fans, like many of George Lucas’s other creations. Regardless of how he feels about critics and how they feel about him, no one has given back more to the industry and filmmaking than George Lucas, and the museum is physical proof.
