According to Variety, a new Muppet production is being prepared!

Planned to premiere in 2026 as a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary to The Muppet Show, the Disney+ special will have the Muppets returning to the Muppet Theatre to create a new variety show. The big guest star for the special will apparently be Sabrina Carpenter and the show will supposedly feature work by veteran Muppet performers. Albertina Rizzo is claimed as the special’s writer and executive producer alongside Alex Timbers, who will also direct. Sabrina Carpenter is also said to executive produce. Variety further claims that this special could serve as a way to relaunch the Muppets into a new iteration of their old iconic series.

Things haven’t been great for the Muppets in recent years, with their mockumentary-style show coming to an end pretty quickly after a middling reception in 2016, while Muppets Haunted Mansion and The Muppets Mayhem (focused on the titular wild drummer Mayhem and the Electric Mayhem band) from more recent years saw very little attention from general audiences.

Hopefully, this 50th anniversary special will see the Muppets regain some of their old magic in the eyes of the viewing public, but such a revival might face a great many challenges.
