The Problem With Leaks Discussed By Sonic Team Head

Leaks are a touchy subject in fandom spaces. Some people don’t care and are just desperate for whatever information they can find about upcoming shows, games, movies, comics, and more. Others, however, are a bit more sensitive regarding leaks. They claim it ruins the surprise of discovering something for the first time. However, while both sides may ultimately see leaks as harmless for a brand, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says otherwise. In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, the topic of leaks was brought up to Iizuka, and he had this to say in response:
“This is just a general response, not anything specific to this game, but from a publishing perspective the publisher is always trying to control, plan, organise and present information and surprises to people to have the most fun, and get the most attention, [and] get people as excited as best as possible.”
Iizuka went on to say that leaks can potentially put licensing deals in jeopardy, saying, “In the event that you’re dealing with licensed content, sometimes that leak will destroy a deal, and now you can’t do some stuff because someone leaked something.”

He went on to say that while it is understandable that “a lot of people really, really want to know immediately all this great, cool, fun stuff. But ultimately when people leak they’re ruining the plans and potentially ruining the content, and we’d really like people to think about that and maybe not do this kind of negative stuff so much.”
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds features a whole slew of guest characters in addition to the regular Sonic cast, but many of these were leaked before they could be officially announced. The officially announced guest characters include Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid, Joker from Persona, Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, and a whole collaboration with Minecraft. There have been other characters leaked across social media, but for the sake of this article, we will not leak them here. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds speeds onto all platforms on September 25th, 2025. This excludes the Nintendo Switch 2, however, which will have its version released on a different date.
