Christopher Nolan and Timothée Chalamet had a lengthy conversation about Interstellar, which is the only project they’ve collaborated on. During the film's IMAX 70mm screening at AMC Universal Citywalk in Los Angeles, Nolan and Chalamet reminisced about creating Interstellar, including what they thought about the project and each other. For Chalamet, Interstellar is a game-changer that came at the right time for the young actor, who didn’t have a large role in it. He played Matthew McConaughey’s son, who was “number 12 on the call sheet.” Chalamet admits he’s a huge fan of it, and “it’s remained my favorite project I’ve ever been in. It’s the film I’ve seen the most of, of all the films ever made in human history.” He’s still bummed that his role as Tom was reduced during editing. Christopher Nolan revealed that the project, which was written by his brother, Jonathan Nolan, first belonged to Steven Spielberg, but after he moved on to another movie, Nolan decided to work on it. He says, “When it became available, it was a case of me saying to Jonathan, ‘How would you feel if I took this and tried to combine it with some of my ideas and change a bit with what it was?’ He was fine with it.”
Nolan also talked about the film’s mixed reviews from the audience and critics. Not everyone loved it as much as he loved the idea behind it, but he says, Interstellar is the movie he’s most well known for nearly 10 years since its release. Nolan admits, “For years, people would recognize me somewhere and talk about ‘Dark Knight,'“and “over the last 10 years it’s become ‘Interstellar.’ It’s a wonderful thing. We re-released it two years ago, and it made $5 million. It’s amazing the success it’s had.”

He also addressed the criticism he’s received that he’s a cold guy who makes cold films, and admits it’s something that bothers him. Nolan also praised Chalamet for the scene where Tom records messages for his father, in which the actor did his own thing, which his director didn’t initially like, but came to appreciate. He told Chalamet, “I didn’t particularly like it. I told you about it, and you went ahead and did whatever the fuck you wanted and carried on. But I was like, ‘He knows what he wants to do and has an idea.’ It wasn’t about being stubborn. You had planned what you wanted to do. You planned your choices, and you didn’t want to abandon that on a casual whim for me. You wanted to test that and challenge that and see if I kept coming back, which I didn’t. I’ll find a logic to that in the edit suite.” Christopher Nolan and Timothée Chalamet’s reunion is available to watch on Nolan Archive’s YouTube channel.
