The wait is over.
Sort of.
Yesterday, Netflix released the first trailer for the upcoming season of their live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and gave us our first glimpse of Miya Cech as Toph, the earthbender who will train Aang. It’s mostly a trailer of clips from the season, but we can extrapolate some familiar places and perhaps story bits from it.
A large portion of the trailer is spent on introducing earthbending as the focus, with the underground arena where Aang, Katara, and Sokka meet Toph heavily featured. Sadly, but perhaps more to increase anticipation, The Boulder is not shown (though there is a brief glimpse of someone who could be The Boulder being knocked back by a…well, boulder).

We also see a few clips of the Serpent’s Pass, a segment from the animated show that had the Gaang crossing a narrow mountain range surrounded by water on their journey to Ba Sing Se. The giant sea serpent they fight there is shown, with Aang gliding away from it and Katara surfing on the water doing her thing. There’s also a brief glimpse of what looks to be the Earth Kingdom palace, but it’s dark and not clear if this is pre-coup or not (oops, spoilers…but really, it’s been nearly 20 years). Azula and her characteristic use of lightning make an appearance, as well as the scene of Zuko training with Uncle Iroh on how to deal with such a power.
There’s a lot of carry over from the animated show that seem to be featured in this trailer, like the picture-negative portrayal of Toph’s use of sound and vibrations to see, but there’s some changes too. For one, we see Suki and Sokka taking on Mai and Ty Lee, which doesn’t happen in the animated version, as well as Appa being present at the Serpent’s Pass, but as we know from the first season – and when it comes to live-action adaptations – there are some changes in store. Still it indicates the show runners could be skipping the arc of Appa’s kidnapping, which is one of the most emotionally charged aspects of season two in the animated show, and could also hint at an abandonment of the Si Wong Desert arc of the animated season, which has far reaching implications for how the Gaang take on the Fire Nation. We will have to wait and see how they bridge and adjust for these changes.
No release date is specified, but the trailer ends with a “Coming in 2026”
