5 Reasons To Return To The Cinema For A Re-Release

Recently, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith made its way back to cinemas for a theatrical re-release, and in the fall, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring received the same treatment. You may wonder if it’s worth it, especially if you own the films at home or can easily access them through a streaming service. While the snacks at home are free, and subtitles are at your discretion, there are a few reasons to consider a trip to the theater for your favorite films.

5. Surround Sound

Cinemas are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Not only is the screen much bigger than your home set, but the sound is engineered to hit from different angles. In effect, a movie theater is a different medium than a television screen, even if you’re watching the same film. The darkness of the movie theater, which is not always possible at home, adds to the ambience and lets you focus on the film. The theater rules, too, while sometimes burdensome, take your attention away from scrolling through TikTok and Instagram and make sure your focus is on the art in front of you. In some cases, the release adds media. For instance, when Fantasia was released again in 2015, some theaters had a live orchestra accompanying the film.

4. Supporting The Arts

Speaking of art, attending these events, which are sometimes cheaper than new releases, brings revenue to the theaters, allowing cinemas to purchase newer movies. While seeing a new film is always a gamble, returning to a cherished one is a sure thing, and it’s not quite the same as sitting in an empty house with the TV on.

3. Communal Experience

Going to the cinema necessitates going out. However, a movie is a very low-obligation social event. You wouldn’t be doing much more than you do at home, but that extra step can make you feel more connected with others. If you lean more toward introverted activities, a favorite film that you can share with a group of quiet strangers is not a bad option.

2. Crowd Reaction

When you attend a cinema, you’re in a crowd, which means reactions to the film aren’t limited to your own reaction. I remember the theater erupting in applause when Harrison Ford made his return in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The energy of the audience guides the crowd’s emotional response. When the entire theater applauds after a film, you may feel like you’ve just witnessed high cinema.

1. Cultural Event

Some films, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, get released every year with a crowd that knows exactly how to act. A Minecraft Movie may eventually become a kid-friendly cultural event, given the amount of Chicken Jockey popcorn throwing in theaters across the United States. Other re-releases are once-in-a-lifetime chances to experience a moment where a film that you may have already seen becomes the zeitgeist for however long the hype lasts. In two years, Star Wars Celebration will be in Los Angeles, giving theaters an incentive to rescreen the films. There is also talk of certain episodes of Star Wars: Andor being released in cinemas.

So yes, you can stay at home with your favorite snacks in your favorite recliner. But when the movie ends, and the house goes quiet, you may have enjoyed the film, but it was a completely passive experience. It’s your prerogative whether to go or not, but if you have the funds, consider making the extra effort to see your favorite films in the way they were meant to be seen, in a dark room with an expectant crowd, ready and willing to be awed.
