With Ahsoka fast approaching, fans who were introduced to Tano in The Mandalorian are wondering if they will be able to enjoy it as a standalone series, or whether they will need to “do homework” and watch her previous content for it all to make sense. After all, the famous Togruta has appeared in Tales of the Jedi, Rebels, and The Clone Wars. She has grown from being Anakin’s inexperienced Padawan to becoming one of the most prolific force users in the Star Wars universe. Dave Filoni (showrunner for most of Ahsoka’s content) has had plenty of experience continuing a story while simultaneously creating something new. He will undoubtedly be able to give brand-new fans something they will enjoy, while also giving longtime fans a few Easter Eggs and callbacks. For those fans who enjoy a deeper dive, here are five more essential episodes to watch to prepare for the Ahsoka series.

5. The Clone Wars Season 3, Episode 22 - “Wookiee Hunt”

After Ahsoka is captured on Felucia by Trandoshan slavers, she is transported to an island where she and other younglings are to be hunted for sport. As the second part of this two-episode arc begins, we rejoin Ahsoka just after the captured younglings' leader is killed. She convinces the remaining few to go on the offensive and attack and commandeer the next transport ship and escape. They make a brave attempt, but the ship crashes. They do, however, discover the captured Chewbacca. Chewie convinces the group to attempt to recover equipment and make a communication device. The addition of the Wookiee emboldens the young Jedi, and they decide to go on the offensive and fight their captors. The group put up a valiant effort, but only succeed after Chewbacca’s backup arrived.

This episode shows the resourcefulness of the young Padawan, and also her tenacious spirit. There are a few times when she could have given up, but through her training, she keeps a level head and is able to beat (with a few Wookiees’ help) the group of slavers. Not succumbing to the dark side, Ahsoka showed the resourcefulness and determination of a Jedi Knight.

4. Rebels Season 2, Episode 18 - “Shroud of Darkness“

While looking for a location that can serve as a Rebel base, Kanan and Ezra are pursued relentlessly by the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister. Exhausted and running out of options, Kanan decides to go to Ahsoka for help. The trio decides to return to Lothal and see if they can contact Yoda for advice at the Jedi temple from the first season. They are separated and have a vision through the Force. Kanan realizes he cannot control Ezra’s fate, Ezra learns the location of where they can go to “win,” and Ahsoka sees and hears Anakin, then Vader.

This episode is one of the last episodes she would appear in, and showcased how much pain she keeps hidden under the surface. For example, Ezra walks in on her rewatching an old training holo of Anakin, and we see her emotional reaction when she gets to see Yoda again. Through all this, she still believes there is hope and pushes onward.

3. Rebels Season 4, Episode 13 - “A World Between Worlds”

When Ahsoka disappeared at the end of season two of the Rebels series, it caused a war between fans. Many believed that her battle with Vader was the end, and that her walking into the darkness was her metaphorical end. Others believed that the young Togruta survived, and would definitely return. As time (and an entire season) passed, it looked as though her darker fate might be confirmed, but in one of the last episodes of the series, Ahsoka returned in dramatic fashion.

In the previous episode, Ezra and members of the ghost crew snuck into an Imperial dig site on Lothal and discovered an entrance to the fabled World Between Worlds. Sabine is captured, but Ezra breaks through and discovers a magical gateway for events from the past and future. As Ezra walks around, he notices Morai (Ahsoka’s pet companion) and sees the Togruta fighting Vader in a Stargate-type device. In a panic, he grabs her before the killing blow and saves her life. Shocked and confused by Ezra’s older appearance, she learns of Kanan’s death and what has been happening since her fight with Vader. Ezra, realizing he has changed Ahsoka’s fate, becomes convinced he can save his former masters as well. Ahsoka reminds him that if he saves Kanan, it would lead to their death, and that he must learn to let go, as she once did with her master. The duo’s conversation is cut short as they are attacked by the Emperor. They manage to escape, with Ahsoka returning to Malachor (after the temple collapse) and Ezra returning to The Ghost Crew and shutting the door to the temple permanently. It has been rumored that the plot of the Ahsoka series would center around the promise she made to Ezra to “find him when she got back,” and with the World Between Worlds appearing in the trailer, this is a must-see episode.

2. The Clone Wars Season 5, Episode 20 - “The Wrong Jedi”

As The Clone Wars series went on, fans became increasingly worried about whether Ahsoka would (or could) survive the events of Order 66. She was not in the original trilogy, and there was never a guarantee she would survive until the end of the war. The last arc of season five saw Ahsoka framed by her friend Barriss Offee and kicked out of the Jedi Order. Alone and on the run, she pairs up with Ventress at first, but the two are both (separately) defeated by the disguised Offee. Asajj escapes, but has her lightsabers taken, and Tano is ambushed and taken prisoner by Republic forces.

The final episode starts with the Jedi Council being pressured to expel Tano so she can face a military trial. The Jedi cave and none stand with her except Padmé, who agrees to represent her, and Anakin, who hunts for Ventress. After he locates and defeats her, she reveals the only person who could have known their location was Ahsoka’s friend Barriss. In a race against time, Ahsoka’s trial starts, and Anakin goes to the temple to confront Offee. Anakin tricks Barriss into revealing her deceptive nature, and after an intense battle, he defeats her and drags her to Ahsoka’s trial. Offee, showing almost no guilt, states that the Jedi are the real villains and most responsible for the war. Ahsoka is subsequently released but, feeling betrayed and lost, she decides not to return to the Order. This episode is important in terms of what happens, but also for the possible foreshadowing of Offee’s return in the Ahsoka series.

1. The Clone Wars Season 7 Episode 12 - “Victory and Death”

This episode is widely regarded as one of the best finales to a show, ever. Star Wars: The Clone Wars ended in the most tragic way imaginable. The last four episodes of the series showcased the last few days of the war (even overlapping events from the movie Revenge of the Sith), culminating in Order 66 and the death of the Republic. As “Victory and Death” starts, the audience joins Ahsoka just after she removes Rex’s inhibitor chip and the duo makes their way to a means of transport away from the Republic ship. Meanwhile, Darth Maul (who was released by Tano as a diversion) sabotages the cruiser, which sets it on a collision course with the planet below. Ahsoka and Rex try to escape, but realize they will have to go through their friends to do so. In a heartwarming scene, Ahsoka tells Rex that he is a good soldier and they agree to not hurt the troopers if they can help it. Rex tries to reason with his fellow trooper Jesse, but to no avail. Rex and Ahsoka are attacked, but manage to escape the ship before it crashes. The ensuing scene is a harrowing shot of Ahsoka at the mass grave of her fellow troopers. Some of the helmets (left as gravestones) were even decorated in honor of the Togruta. She stands there defeated and in shock, slowly letting her lightsaber fall to the ground. The final shot in the series is Morai flying above Vader as he activates the lightsaber (and gift) he once gave to his apprentice.

Ahsoka premieres on Disney+ on August 23.
