There have been many iterations of Sherlock Holmes on screens both big and small. Now there is to be another in animated form. A series from Harry King Television and producer David Lipman is in development under the working title Animated Sherlock.
Drawing from the Nicholas Sercombe novels The Unexpurgated Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the series will aim for a mature audience. Stories will be told in season-long arcs, while also including the original cases of Sherlock Holmes from Doyle’s work. Lipman, best known for his work on the original Shrek films, is not the only one working on the series as Tim John, who worked on A Street Cat Named Bob, and Michael Ryan, who worked on Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, are also part of the project.
As part of the announcement of the series, Sercombe said in a statement, “Taking the animation route allows us to reimagine Sherlock Holmes on a grander, more imaginative and risqué scale than before. Having David, Michael, and Tim steering the series with us combines their legacy in animation with the well-loved classic IP. Together we are creating out very own Sherlock Holmes universe that feels both timeless and completely fresh – rich in character, humour, and adventure.”
