Despite a poor box office turnout, He-Man fans don’t have to give up hope for a follow-up to Masters of the Universe. The film received high praise from audiences but only raked in $89.9 million worldwide, failing to break even with the $170 million it cost to produce the film. The Scary Movie remake landed just above it in earnings with Backrooms and Obsession trailing close behind Masters of the Universe. However, Amazon may still greenlight a sequel. Even though the film failed in the box office, it will eventually make its way to streaming services. Amazon even nixed a theatrical run in France because of a law that would require 17 months to pass before theatrical films can be streamed. If the goal wasn’t to raise money but to raise awareness of He-Man, so families will be inverted when it hits streaming platforms, then Amazon may be successful.

Amazon MGM Studios domestic distribution chief Keith Wilson seemed unfazed by the poor earnings. He said, “This weekend represents a very solid start for Masters of the Universe and the passionate, multigenerational audience responses we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic.” He continued, “Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy – building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.” Audiences who enjoyed the movie will appreciate that there’s likely more to come, even if it won’t be in theaters.
