Eragon is based on a 2002 book of the same name. It is the first book of four in Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle series. The book was fairly successful, ranking among the best-selling hardback children's books in 2003 and best-selling paperbacks in 2005. The first on-screen adaptation of the book was a 2006 movie. 20th Century Fox distributed this film. The film did not perform as desired, nor was it received well by critics, and future installments were never pursued.
When Disney acquired most of the content rights of 20th Century Fox, the author himself, as well as fans, had hoped that the story would be rebooted and took to social media to push for it to happen. An official release date for the series has yet to be announced. The official description reads (via Variety), “When destiny selects an ordinary teenager to become the first Dragon Rider in over a hundred years, he must forge an unbreakable bond with his dragon, master ancient magic, and challenge the mad king who destroyed the Riders.” The 2006 film can be streamed on Disney+, and the book series can be rented at your local library or purchased through most book retailers.
