A new lawsuit has been filed against video game production company Aspyr Media by French voice actress Françoise Cadol. Cadol was the original French voice actress of Lara Croft, the protagonist of the Tomb Raider franchise, filling the role across 11 games. As reported by Le Parisien, in Aspyr’s Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered (2025), Cadol’s representation alleges that her vocals from the games have been artificially reproduced for the remastered work without notice or her consent; subsequently, they have filed a cease and desist order against the company.
Cadol’s lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, released a statement describing the audio in question (via Game Developer), "You immediately notice that there's a very strong metallic impact, it's very choppy, lacking in intonation, or on the contrary, poorly performed. But the timbre is reminiscent of Françoise's." They are alleging that it is clearly artificially reproduced audio and are requesting that the game be removed from the marketplace while this issue is being addressed, as well as an estimate of the number of copies sold thus far. This case joins a growing number of lawsuits filed by performers and creators against various entities for the use of A.I. in the recreation of their likeness.

Aspyr Media is a Texas-based video game development company well-known for remastering older games to function on newer platforms. Examples of their work include the recent remaster of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter (2024) and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered (2024). In this case, the company first worked with fellow development company Crystal Dynamics to create Tomb Raider I-III Remastered in 2024, and most recently, Tomb Raider IV-VI in 2025.
This isn’t the only alleged use of an AI-generated voice in an Aspyr remaster. On the contrary, it is not the first for this project specifically. According to entertainment news site Games Radar+, the Brazilian voice actress Lene Bastos also had her performance ripped off and recreated by AI. Bastos performed the Brazilian Portuguese dub of the character in the 2003 game Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Aspyr reportedly acknowledged that this was true, but that this was done by “external development partners” and “without [their] knowledge or approval.” They are also reportedly working on its removal.
Aspyr has yet to officially comment on the claims from the French actress.
