'The Mandalorian And Grogu': Everything The New Official Trailer Got Right Plus A Few Questions

There was a lot of criticism of The Mandalorian and Grogu’s first trailer, which was released a few months ago. The film’s recent Super Bowl ad didn’t get the reactions Disney may have been hoping for, even though some of the outrage was definitely manufactured for a 30-second spot that was only meant to be cute and wholesome. Despite all that, it’s hard to feel outraged about the film’s newest trailer, which dropped online on February 17. This trailer really hit the spot and had everything you’d expect from a Star Wars movie. It had all the elements of a good movie trailer, along with a few surprises that kept it a topic of discussion online for several days. The latest trailer is action-packed and feels like a movie, whereas the previous one was criticized for looking like a season of the show. This criticism, although valid, was strange, especially as The Mandalorian was often praised for feeling and looking like a movie. Nevertheless, Jon Favreau and the team clearly took the criticism to heart and addressed it. Here’s everything the new official trailer got right:
The Cinematic Scale
The trailer confirms that this is a Star Wars movie, and not just another season of The Mandalorian. There is an undeniable cinematic feel and aesthetic, thanks to better cinematography, bigger sets, and sound. Adelphi base has never looked better, and fans went crazy over the opening shots of a sunset. Among other new environments is Nal Hutta, the homeworld of the Hutts. There’s also a shadowy, neon-light underworld setting similar to downtown Coruscant. This is probably Nar Shaddaa, which is a moon of Nal Hutta. There’s also an appearance by an Ardennian shopkeeper, voiced by Martin Scorsese, which makes this feel even more like a movie trailer compared to the other content released so far. The action scenes involving the Razor Crest and clips of Din torching his enemies look outstanding. The Rotta and Din Djarin duel looks like it will be a major highlight, but there’s probably much more that’s being kept a surprise for later.

Pedro Pascal Is The Mandalorian
In case anyone forgot, Pedro Pascal is Din Djarin, and he’s the voice and face of the character. This time, it looks like Pascal is here to make a far bigger impact with the armor than he did previously. He may actually get to flex his muscles as the character. Fans had hoped to see Pedro in the movie, and a few even hoped for a glimpse of him in the trailers, but this far exceeded their expectations. This will be the first time we see Pedro in the Mando suit since The Mandalorian Season 2’s finale, which was 6 years ago! This is a moment fans have longed to see for years now, and it definitely feels earned regardless of the character’s beliefs about his helmet. Let’s see how removing his helmet pans out for him this time around.
The Dynamic Duo And The Emotional Core
The trailer gives equal space to Din Djarin and Grogu to shine as individuals. Grogu is back with his adorable antics, but he has grown up and seems ready for a few more responsibilities. He still loves to push Din and the Razor Crest’s buttons, but he can disarm a mouse droid using the Force. The scenes of Grogu meditating on a swampy planet, which could be Nal Hutta, contrast with moments of him munching on blue macaroons. Jon Favreau deserves credit for not overdoing the cuteness but also for allowing Grogu to remain childlike. The kids will find him relatable as long as he’s like them, but Star Wars also has a very impatient adult fan base that already seems fed up with Grogu. This trailer caters to kids and adults as far as Grogu is concerned. It shows us that he’s getting stronger and is more capable of taking care of himself, and he might be ready to protect his father as well. He’s also learning to balance his Jedi abilities with his Mandalorian upbringing. Fans are curious about his little adventure in the swamp world, and clips of him fastening his beskar armor have gone viral.

Din Djarin is also back as the center of attention after becoming a side character in his own show during The Mandalorian Season 3. The stakes are much higher for him as he tries to navigate the galaxy as a father and mentor to Grogu. His beliefs are being challenged, but he’s still a dangerous, formidable warrior who can cook any enemy regardless of their size. This is obvious from his gladiator fight with Rotta the Hutt, but the real challenge will be for him to face off against the albino snake monster. Fans are wondering if Grogu might help him defeat the monster by staging a rescue, and if this huge opponent will help the duo prepare to face an even bigger creature - the Mythosaur.
While they get to shine individually, it only takes one line of dialogue to remind everyone that their father-son relationship is the film’s emotional core. When Din says that Grogu will live many centuries, and he won’t always be around to protect him, it’s a reminder that Djarin is a mere mortal and his time is limited. That makes every moment they share extremely special for them. Grogu will have to live with these memories for centuries, and Din will need to teach him how to protect himself quickly. Their bond remains the most relatable in Star Wars, and all future films and TV shows will have a tough time outdoing it. When Colonel Ward gives Din his mission, the Sabacc Cards, it’s clear he’s doing it all for his son’s future and not just for credits.

The Non-Human Creatures
The Mandalorian and Grogu is the anti-Andor, because just a two-minute trailer had more aliens than 24 episodes of Andor combined. Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, has a significant role in the movie, as do the Hutt twins. Embo and Zeb Orrelios will make their live-action debut and continue the Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau tradition of bringing animated characters to live-action. There’s also the snake monster and, most importantly, for the first time, one of the co-leads of a Star Wars movie, Grogu, is not a human.
The Burning Questions
A great trailer never gives away the whole plot. The Mandalorian and Grogu’s new trailer shows us that Din is working for the New Republic, but the threat of another galactic conflict looms large. The shadowy Imperial Remnant seems to be plotting its return on the sidelines, but there are several other missing pieces as well. The trailer has fans wondering whether Din and Grogu will get separated in the movie. Does Grogu need to rescue his dad, or do they go on separate missions and reunite later on? There’s a scene where Mando grabs Grogu out of the water, and it looks like the same planet where Grogu is shown meditating. Could this be when Din comes back from his meeting with the Hutts, or does that happen later? Watching them separated and struggling to get back to each other will surely tug at our heartstrings.

The trailer also makes us question if Din is moving toward a more moderate path, and if having his helmet removed leads to his return to Mandalore once again to atone for his sins? Jon Favreau and Pedro Pascal have admitted that the helmet removal is tricky and should only be done under crucial circumstances; however, there has to be some progress on this front, otherwise, this moment begins to lose its impact. Djarin should definitely question his beliefs because keeping the helmet on means Grogu will have almost no memories of seeing his face, apart from one tearful goodbye at the end of Season 2. Aside from the helmet, we wonder if this movie will feature an appearance by Grand Admiral Thrawn. A movie should be the perfect place to showcase the era’s biggest threat, so there’s hopefully some Thrawn mention or cameo saved for the end.

The movie also has to tie into Ahsoka Season 2, as that takes place after the events of the film. The final few minutes should lead directly into Episode 1 of Ahsoka Season 2, and that means characters from the show can make an appearance here as well. Zeb, Ezra, Hera, and even Thrawn can make surprise appearances, but maybe Jon and Dave are planning an even bigger surprise like the Season 2 Luke Skywalker one. Anything is possible, but we’ll have to wait until May 22 for answers.
