Godzilla has seen a resurgence in recent years, both with Toho and Legendary creating films such as Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Only Legendary has so far created a shared universe, dubbed the MonsterVerse. That seems set to change, as in an interview with Japan’s News Picks, Keiji Ota discussed plans for the King of the Monsters.

The Chief Godzilla Officer stated that, “In addition to the Godzilla films created by Hideaki Anno (2016’s Shin Godzilla) and Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla Minus One), if Toho itself creates original concepts for Godzilla, we will be able to strategically produce spin-offs as well. Just as Legendary has its MonsterVerse, we are currently progressing with plans to call ours Godzilla World.”

While Toho owns 100% of the Godzilla IP, Ota said that having different versions of Godzilla makes the King of the Monsters better appeal to varied audiences. Gozilla had a ten-year hiatus from 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, which would have been longer had Legendary not proven the love across the world for Godzilla with their 2014 reboot. And then continuing that with a shared universe.

As Oti explained, Legendary is linking the Godzilla movies together, rather than just viewing them as standalones. They are creating these movies with the concept of building a franchise within a vast universe. As with Marvel’s shared universe, I was impressed by their ability to design such a world.” The desire to create their own shared universe likely increased when Godzilla Minus One became the highest grossing Japanese live-action film of all time in North America.

Toho are putting into place a 10-year roadmap for Godzilla, investing over 15 billion yen (approximately $94 million) to expand the brand beyond movie profits. Further Godzilla Stores, rides, and attractions across the world, along with video games and streaming series for younger audiences. As Ota concluded, this roadmap should help with making Godzilla “into an IP that continues for another 50 or 100 years.”
