The Gundam franchise is a staple of the mecha genre, kickstarting the real robot branch of the genre. The real robot genre indicates that the mech suits involved are more realistic in weaponry and design, and lean away from supernatural elements. The first Gundam project created was Yoshiyuki Tomino’s 1979 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. These films are specifically based on a spin-off novel trilogy from 1989-1990, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash.
