When Marvel acquired the movie rights to the X-Men franchise in 2019, fans have been eagerly awaiting what they will do with it in the long run. While the original X-Men cast is coming back for Avengers: Doomsday (2026), a reboot of the title is coming as well. Headed by Thunderbolts* (2025) director Jake Schreier, the reboot will more firmly usher in the mutants to the MCU. In an interview with The Playlist, the director spoke about what fans can expect from Marvel’s take on the X-Men.
When asked if his take would be fairly different compared to the Fox films, Schreier said, “Yeah, I think that’s fair to say.” He also joked that “there’s that red sniper dot out there somewhere, you know.” With a title as large as X-Men involved, a fair number of people will have strong opinions on how the story is developed from the audience perspective. “But to be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that’s like a very rare and fortunate opportunity. That’s very exciting.”

At this point in the development, especially considering it is a Marvel project, Schreier cannot say much regarding the plot’s direction. The director did touch on how much opportunity for character exploration there will be, “What I can say is, it’s just inherently interesting and complex material…The core idea of what ‘X-Men’ is involves complexity. It’s an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict.”
He continued, “These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that’s inherently interesting and complex material.” Marvel President Kevin Feige previously let it slip that Schreier is “going to make a youth-focused reboot. That may be reflected in mutant castings, and it’ll definitely be felt in the tone and perspective of the film.”
A title or solid release window for Schreier’s X-Men reboot have not been named at this time. The next appearance of the X-Men will be in Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Original cast members from Fox’s first X-Men run, including Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme, and Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr will be featured in the film. Doomsday (2026) sees several superhero groups from other universes come together to face Doctor Doom. The film will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
