James Gunn Talks 'Peacemaker' Season 2 Ending And Its Future

The second season of Peacemaker has come to a close. The 11th Street Kids formed the covert operations agency Checkmate with the goal of improving the world. Lex Luthor and Rick Flag Sr. finally found a habitable world, using it as a prison for metahumans convicted of crimes, calling it Salvation. Chris Smith ended up locked away in this place, with paperwork being falsified to make him seem like a volunteer. In an interview with Deadline, Director James Gunn explained aspects of the season’s ending and what the future holds for the characters.
Gunn discussed the character development Chris has shown over the seasons, “By the end of Season 1, he becomes aware of this trauma, and I think in Season 2, he’s aware of it, and it actually makes his life a little bit hard…This second season is about that internal journey of Christopher Smith.”

The introduction of the Checkmate Agency and the Planet of Salvation were always meant to be included, and their general appearance has been long planned. Gunn explained, “Well, those are the two things that were always a part of this season. So when we sat down, even before I sat down with the writers’ room in DC, I had sort of mapped out what I thought the general story was, and two important aspects to that were Checkmate and especially Salvation.”
Gunn reaffirmed the importance of Chris in the DCU, “Moving forward, yes. He’s important. He’s really important to me. Peacemaker is an important character. I said from the beginning when we took on this job, it’s about really propping up and maintaining and repositioning.”
Gunn expressed that there were no immediate plans for a third season at this time. However, things may not be over in general for the show’s cast members. When asked if they would return in any capacity in Supergirl (2026) and Man of Tomorrow (2027), he said, “Well, we’ll have to see. That’s a secret.” This, combined with Gunn’s expressed love for the character of Peacemaker, confirms that the question of a cast member’s appearance is one of when, not if.
Season two of Peacemaker is the third installment of Chapter One of the DCU reboot. The plot serves as a follow-up to Superman (2025)and will lead into the sequel film Man of Tomorrow (2027). All episodes of Peacemaker are now available to stream on HBO Max.
