In a weird twist, a new trailer for the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds debuted at the 2025 Kids’ Choice Awards. The trailer focuses on the inclusion of SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star in the game. SpongeBob is seen driving his Patty Wagon, and as the trailer quotes from the 2004 The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, “You don’t need a license to drive a sandwich.” The trailer also shows off the “nautical nonsense” themed tracks, including Bikini Bottom and the Krusty Krab. In the latter location, cashier Squidward Tentacles is seen at his post in a clever cameo. The trailer also revealed upcoming collaborations with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Avatar: Legends through a clever send-up of the French narrator from the SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon.
The inclusion of the SpongeBob SquarePants universe in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds had been leaked previously, but this trailer is the first official acknowledgement of the collaboration between SEGA and Nickelodeon. Reactions to this announcement have been mixed to positive. Fans have brought up some concerns, however. One concern is the fear that these collaborations overshadow Sonic and company in what is meant to mainly be a Sonic-focused racing game.

In response to this, however, other fans have brought up that modern Sonic the Hedgehog racing games have often featured crossover characters, and they also mention that the lack of them in 2019’s Team Sonic Racing was something that was something many fans took issue with.
Another user also pointed out that there’s already plenty of Sonic representation, especially when compared to previous Sonic racing titles.
Another issue that was brought up was the lack of voice lines for SpongeBob and Patrick in the trailer. This led to speculation about whether the characters would be voiced in the game or voiceless, a la Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl! when it first came out in 2021. Fans have speculated that this may be due to Paramount’s licensing terms for the characters or simply the cost of hiring Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke to voice SpongeBob and Patrick, respectively (though SEGA had no issue hiring Keanu Reeves to voice Movie Shadow in Sonic X Shadow Generations).
Some fans are holding on to the hope that these characters will be fully voiced, as there was one SpongeBob voice line in the trailer (the “Yeah!” as he and the other racers crash into the Krusty Krab), and there may even be one already in the game, as some fans claimed to have heard that same “Yeah!” in gameplay footage. Fans also speculate that the bubbles heard in the gameplay are placeholders and not the final voice lines.
The characters will be included as part of the second DLC pack and through the season pass for the game. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds speeds onto all major platforms on September 25th of this year (except Nintendo Switch 2, which will come out at a later date).
