Nearly six years after The Rise of Skywalker debuted in cinemas, Lucasfilm and Disney have released the final production costs of the movie.

With $593.7 million, it was the third most expensive film of all time, trailing only Jurassic World: Dominion ($598.75 million) and The Force Awakens ($596.64 million).

It may seem strange that it took Disney so long to reveal this number, but there is a good reason for that:

Like its predecessors, The Rise of Skywalker was largely shot in the UK, which reimburses a production with up to 25.5% of the costs, provided that at least 10% of the movie's costs are incurred in the counttheir eligibility are eligible, film studios often establish dedicated companies inmust that have to provide a detailed list of all the costs associated with the production. These filings are submitted in waves, starting with pre-production and continuing long after the film has been theatrically released, to ensure that every bill has been paid.

Despite the massive amount, the filing for The Rise of Skywalker shows that the movie cost less than budgeted. This is attributed to the fact that the post-production for Episode IX was three months shorter than that of The Force Awakens, as Disney wanted the film to come out in December 2019.

On the other hand, The Rise of Skywalker had much fewer reshoots than Episode VII, which director J.J. Abrams explained with the uncertainty surrounding the production of the first Star Wars Sequel Trilogy film: "We didn't know if these characters would work, if the actors would be able to carry a Star Wars movie. There were a lot of things we didn't know. On [The Rise of Skywalker], we knew who and what worked."

The reimbursement from the UK brought the production cost down to $489.9 million, and the movie made $1.077 billion at the box office.

It is widely assumed that the profit a film makes is split 50:50 between the production company and the theatres. In this case, this would mean that Disney earned $538.5 million and made a profit of $48.6 million.

Of course, the revenue from ticket sales is not the only way a movie makes money, and especially in the case of Star Wars, Disney surely cashed in massively from selling merchandise. But this revenue typically can't be directly attributed to The Rise of Skywalker, but rather to the Star Wars brand as a whole.

On the other hand, the production cost does not include the marketing budget for the film, which Disney did not release (and likely never will).

So, was The Rise of Skywalker actually profitable? In all likelihood, we may never know...
