Rapunzel may be coming to the big screen in a live-action adaptation. According to Deadline, the live-action adaptation of Tangled is back in development at Disney after being put on hold in April 2025. There is even a potential cast update! Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to play the film antagonist Mother Gothel. The current phase of production for the film is early development.

Michael Gracey remains the director of the film at this time. Other works Gracey has directed include The Greatest Showman (2017), P!nk: All I Know So Far (2021), and Better Man (2024). The project is still working with a script written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Her best-known works include Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025).

Whether the film will make it out of development or not is still up in the air. The development of a live-action adaptation of Tangled was suspended in April 2025 following the subpar performance of the live-action Snow White (2025). Not every adaptation has performed well, but a handful have seen reasonable success. Most recently, Lilo & Stitch (2025) blew past expectations, hitting over $1 billion in revenue worldwide. If you want to refresh yourself on the plot of Tangled (2010), it is available to stream on Disney+ and can be rented or purchased through major retailers.
