Patty JenkinsStar Wars: Rogue Squadron was a highly anticipated film focusing on the titular pilots of the Rebel Alliance. While the plot was kept under wraps, it was meant to be an original story rather than a comic or video game adaptation. The film was first announced in 2020 and remained in development for a while. In 2023, Variety reported that its development was shelved. However, a month later, at Star Wars Celebration Europe, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy stated that the project was still a regular subject of discussion. In an interview with Polygon, screenwriter Matthew Robinson discussed his experience working on the project.

Robinson enjoyed his experience on the project, “I had a great time writing it. Patty Jenkins is one of my favorite artists in the world. I think she's absolutely brilliant. We had a great time working together. I don't currently know what Lucasfilm wants to do with it.” He continued, mentioning the current shift in leadership, “They're in a pretty big state of flux at the moment, after Kathleen [Kennedy] leaving, and who knows what the future holds for them theatrically.” Kennedy has stepped down, appointing Dave Filoni as President and Chief Creative Officer, and Lynwen Brennan as Co-President to focus on the business side of the company.

The screenwriter discussed his time working with Jenkins, throwing in some discussion of the plot, "It was a great thrill to write that, and especially to work with Patty, who made it a very personal story. It was very much a movie about fighter pilots. Her father was a fighter pilot. It was very personal to her, and we were trying to tell a really great personal story about fighter pilots and Rogue Squadron pilots in the Star Wars universe. I think we did a great job with it, and I really hope one day we get to see a version of that.” While the film isn’t totally dead, it is not currently moving forward as far as we know. In the meantime, Star Wars content is available to stream on Disney+.
