Sony Spider-Verse In Trouble? Sony Reportedly Ready To Work Closely With Marvel

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is reportedly having another upset. According to industry insider DanielRPK (via X), not only is the upcoming live-action Spider-Woman film dead, but the company is more open to collaborating with Marvel to bring other Spider-Man characters, of which Sony owns the film rights, into their films as well. Spider-Woman had Olivia Wilde attached as the director, bringing a level of star power that makes the cancellation mildly surprising. Specific side characters that Marvel is looking to use in the MCU have not been specified at this time.
Rumors about this possible loosening of the reins have been floating since the release of Kraven the Hunter in December 2024. The film performed poorly, following the trend of declining results seen in Sony’s Spider-Man adjacent films. Madame Web (2024) made just over $100 million worldwide, while Venom: The Last Dance (2024) was the worst-performing of the Venom films with a worldwide box office revenue of about $478.9 million. To add the poor performance of Kraven the Hunter (2024) on top of it all, Sony gave their Universe a soft close, not ending all projects but also not moving forward with anything overly risky. From there, talks with Marvel to expand Spider-Man’s presence in the MCU reportedly kicked off.
