So, now there seems to be even more confusion regarding Zak Starkey and The Who. Let's recap the story thus far.
Back in April, it was reported that Zak Starkey, son of former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and drummer for The Who since 1996, was fired from the group over accusations of overplaying. Days later, Pete Townshend cleared the air and clarified that Zak wasn't being fired and that he was simply asked to adjust his style but was otherwise still with the group.
The Who then announced that their upcoming tour would be their last, and it was assumed that Zak would be on that tour. However, earlier this month, it was announced that Zak would be leaving the group, saying that he would be focusing on his other projects. However, Zak clarified that he did not leave the group willingly and that he was fired.
Now, however, it seems miscommunication is at play again. Zak posted on his Instagram to clear up the “noise and confusion” regarding his departure.

“NOISE&CONFUSION!!!! I had a great phone chat with Roger [Daltrey] at the end of last week which truly confused both of us!!!” Starkey began, “Rog said I hadn’t been ‘fired’…I had been ‘retired’ to work n my own projects. I explained to Rog that I have just spent nearly 8 weeks at my studio in Jamaica completing these projects, that my group Mantra Of The Cosmos was releasing one single at the beginning of June and after that had run its course ( usually 5/6 weeks ).”
Zak continued, “I was completely available for the foreseeable future….Rog said 'Oh!' and we kind of left it there- On good terms and great friends as we have always been…Gotta love these guys. As my mum used to say ‘The mind boggles!!!’ XXX.’”
So, it turns out that Zak was let go due to the group thinking he wouldn't be available due to other projects, but it turns out Starkey would be available, which was a surprise to Townshend. Whether or not this leads to another announcement of Zak returning to the group is unclear.
