San Diego Comic Con brought some big news for fans of the Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince. Less than a year after the conclusion of the show’s second arc, ‘The Mystery of Aaravos,’ Wonderstorm would reveal their plans for a third arc of the series, officially named ‘The Dragon King.

Set seven years after The Mystery of Aaravos, the story seems poised to pick up many of the narrative threads left behind, with King Ezran, now a young adult, taking the lead alongside Zym, the eponymous Dragon King, the last Archdragon. This sequel will definitely have a lot on its hands, with the Archdragons gone, King Harrow still out there (now confirmed to have switched places with his bird, Pip, to avoid being assassinated), Aaravos’s plans in motion, and Claudia continuing her spiral into darkness.

Wonderstorm also confirmed that Jack DeSena will reprise his role as Callum, Ezran’s older brother, the main protagonist of the previous two arcs. Additionally, Dante Basco (The Last Airbender) will be returning as the voice of Zym, having voiced the young dragon very briefly in the the last episode. Additionally, Liam O’Brien (Vox Machina) has been cast in an unannounced role in this series. As of now, it is unclear if Sasha Rojen will return as King Ezran, or if the role will be recast for the timeskip.

All of this exciting news, however, comes with a big caveat. While plans for a final three-season arc were announced last year, The Dragon Prince officially came to an end last year with its seventh season, the conclusion to The Mystery of Aaravos. As of now, Netflix has not greenlit The Dragon King, and it is unclear if they will. However, the creatives at Wonderstorm came prepared for such a scenario, announcing that a Kickstarter campaign for The Dragon King will be launching soon.

Wonderstorm Chief Creative Officer and co-founder Justin Richmond had this to say in a press release on the matter:

“The Dragon Prince enjoys the unusual privilege of being a completely independent original property, and the fans have always played an important role in driving the franchise…“We need the community’s help to bring this new series to life, and have come up with some special campaign rewards that will give fans several opportunities to help shape the project and join us on the journey.”

The Kickstarter will first and foremost serve as a demonstration of audience demand, with the hope that if Netflix declines to greenlight The Dragon King, another streaming service or network picks it up.

Their panel at SDCC would showcase a Kickstarter announcement, giving us a look at an older Ezran and Zym. An official trailer will be coming soon.
