'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' Trailer Chock-Full Of New Easter Eggs And Hints
Nintendo and Illumination released a teaser for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during this year’s Super Bowl. Although there’s only thirty seconds of footage, the teaser is packed full of Easter Eggs, which is fitting since Yoshi seems set to be a main character this time around. The first Easter Egg comes from the joint logo of Nintendo and Illumination, where they use a D-pad to represent a plus sign. The second Easter Egg is the army of airships. When pausing the trailer, viewers can see the word BOOM spelled out in white paint on the side of the ship. The shot cuts to a planet with a hole shaped like Bowser Jr.’s mouth and a pair of horns under construction, likely a tribute to his father. A little later on, Yoshi is seen driving Luigi’s motorcycle as evidenced by the L emblem on the front.
The majority of the Easter Eggs come from the moment Peach and Toad enter a bar filled with Bowser’s henchmen. Koopas, Goombas, Shy Guys, and even Buzzy Beetles are present, but the background is also full of references. The portal they go through is a reference to World 2-2 from the original Super Mario Bros. This is the underwater level filled with the squid enemies called Bloopers. Outside the bar, there’s even a holographic projection of a Blooper to drive the reference home. Elsewhere, representations of Spinys, Koopa Shells, and Chain Chomps are present on neon signs around the town. The short teaser also shows multiple instances of the same Easter Egg. In the trailer, Yoshi swallows Kamek and turns him into an egg. The egg retains Kamek’s glasses and sits beside Yoshi as he pilots a mech. The egg also appears next to Bowser Jr. Later, as he leaps into battle and still has Kamek’s glasses around it. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands in theaters on April 1, 2026. See the trailer below.
