After 11 years, Ryan Reynolds finally revealed who was behind the infamous Deadpool leak. In 2014, someone leaked Tim Miller’s CGI test footage as a mock-up for a movie starring Deadpool. The companies were not keen on having an R-rated superhero film, especially since the genre was perceived as family-friendly. However, internet response convinced the studios to greenlight the project, and the Deadpool cinematic franchise was born. Now, Reynolds has finally admitted he was the one who leaked the footage. He said, “Yes, I cheated a little, but I think I was onto something that people would be interested in. And I’m grateful that I listened to that instinct, and I’m grateful that I did the wrong thing in that moment.”
Another source of hesitation was the fact that Deadpool was a sort of fringe character, but that’s exactly what sold Reynolds on the part. He explained, “People didn’t really know who he was, and I loved him. I was obsessed with it because I loved that he knew he was in a comic book movie. It was kind of meta, it was kind of new. But the test footage existed, and it really was a case study of how this could work. And they just wouldn’t do anything with it.”

Reynolds reflected on the initial leak. He remembered thinking, “Some a–hole leaks it online and I’m like you know, looking at the guy in the mirror bruising my teeth. And I’m like, ‘Dude, what have you done? This could be punishable by law!’ But the internet forced the studio to say, ‘We’re gonna make this movie,’ and 24 hours later, that movie had a green light.” In the end, Reyond’s actions birthed three movies: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The last one firmly established Deadpool as part of the MCU since Disney had acquired Fox by that point.
