Hollywood was stunned by the unexpected jaw-dropping performance of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The film, which was written as a finale to the nine-film franchise, opened with a smashing $84 million domestically during its September 5-7 release weekend, far exceeding by nearly three times the film’s expected $35 million take. Additionally, the horror pic did well overseas as well, raking in $194 million worldwide, again subverting expectations. The film has even nearly equaled, if not surpassed, some of the previous eight titles in the Conjuring-verse in their entire run.
Credit for the astounding success of the film was given to New Line Cinema boss Richard Brener and Director Michael Chaves, but Warner Bros. Chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy felt confident that, despite the tumult of six months ago, they had a hit on their hands with this final installment of the Conjuring-verse:
“It’s never fun to be under the microscope. But of course, we know things the public doesn’t know. We know the test scores. We have tracking. We felt pretty good about the hand we were holding. We just wanted the movies to come out.”

Shawn Collins of Box Office Theory also feels that the “finale factor” may be in play here, although he wonders if there was more involved, such as the major shakeup De Luca and Abdy made in the marketing department at the beginning of the year, showing its previous marketing director the door and elevating others to the role.
“The ‘finale factor’ is significant here, in my opinion, but one wonders if there is more to it than that.”
Whatever the ultimate reason(s) for its success, Warner Bros. has had a strong year following the release of hit films such as Minecraft, Sinners, Superman (2025), and now, The Conjuring: Last Rites.
