'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Spoiler-Free Review

The Fantastic Four: First Steps shows that Marvel still has it. It truly has everything, from the casting to the music, to the set design, and the story. It's a perfect comic book film and a fantastic film (sorry, I had to).
Our story begins with the Fantastic Four already established as heroes. The movie did a great job of incorporating their backstories into the narrative being told, rather than making them a separate part of the movie. Despite their powers, they have each adapted well to society.
They have protected the world from minor threats, but nothing as big as they did in this movie. Once the Silver Surfer reveals herself and lets them know their planet is “marked for death,” they have their hands full with defeating Galactus.

With two superhero movies coming out within weeks of each other, people are going to want to compare them. I loved both Superman and The Fantastic Four. Even though they are both about superheroes, they are wildly different in every other regard. I've always been a Marvel fan, but it was nice to see DC finally get a win with Superman. This, and Thunderbolts, which came out earlier this year, have given Marvel a much-needed resurgence.
The set was awesome and encapsulated a futuristic 60s atmosphere. Their tower was probably my favorite set, and it looks like such a cool place to live. When it was first announced, some people were wary about the casting, but after seeing the movie, this cast is perfect. Pedro Pascal is such a great Reed Richards and a wonderful addition to the MCU. The movie did a great job of showing that while Reed may be smart, he’s not perfect and has his own demons to combat. Vanessa Kirby carried the group as Sue Storm, and they would be nothing without her. Joseph Quinn was a great Johnny, and I appreciate that they showed a different side of him, and focused more on his smarts, instead of his womanizer tendencies. Ebon Moss-Bachrach has the best portrayal of The Thing yet. His version is also the best-looking one out of all the portrayals. Ralph Ineson played a terrifying Galactus. I just wish we got more of him. And even though he’s a robot, Herbie was an adorable addition.

Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps both showed us how important family is, whether that’s found family or blood family; it’s important to have people who care about you. At the end of the day, family is who you can count on to be there for you no matter what. Both movies do a wonderful job of showing this. Even though the Fantastic Four had differing opinions when it came to fighting Galactus, they all came together in the end. My biggest issue with this movie was the length. It would’ve benefited from having about 15 minutes more, as some characters could’ve been fleshed out a bit more. I know some people are tired of Marvel, but this movie (and Thunderbolts) proves that they are back and better than ever. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a must-watch and is an excellent way to get back into the MCU.
