Daisy Ridley has been very active on the press trail recently as her new movie Young Woman and the Sea hit theatres on the 31st of May. This month’s Empire Magazine includes a full feature on Ridley along with a stunning photoshoot.

Empire, of course, could not resist asking about the upcoming Star Wars movie. Daisy Ridley describes how Kathleen Kennedy took her to breakfast to broach the topic of returning to play Rey Skywalker.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision. I didn’t say yes right away, Kathy was like, ‘Take as long as you need.’”

It has been five years since Ridley played the part of the young scavenger. The actress admits that she might need to brush up on the character, but she obviously has a lot of enthusiasm for the franchise.

“There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films. Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be part of.”

Carrie Fisher famously described filming Star Wars as isolating, but Lucasfilm has moved forward, and its new stars thankfully don’t have the same difficulties. Ridley described working on set, in the prequels as a supportive experience, and in particular has warm words for J.J. Abrams.

“He was my first real working relationship as an actor, and he always made me feel like I had agency and was always part of conversations.”

Star Wars: The New Jedi Order will be helmed by two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. There’s no other confirmed cast apart from Ridley, but It’s currently on the slate to be released in 2026. Reportedly, Ridley will receive the first draft this month and has already been given updates on the plotline, so development appears to be well underway. Let’s hope for more information soon!
