Andy and Barbara Muschietti, creators of the prequel series It: Welcome to Derry, made an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con with plenty of news to share. According to the official logline, “Set in the world of Stephen King’s IT universe, It: Welcome to Derry is based on King’s IT novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films It and It: Chapter Two.” The prequel is set in 1962 and will focus on how the evil finds its way to Derry. The creators confirmed that this story will include Pennywise’s origin. The series is planned for three seasons, diving further back into the past in each season. The second season is set in 1935, and the third season is set in 1908.
Fans at Comic-Con were treated to a trailer and the first 10 minutes of the premiere. The footage shows a grade school boy with a pacifier. He is watching a movie until an usher kicks him out for being underage. He escapes with the help of the projectionist Hank and his daughter, Ronnie. Then, the scene switches to the boy riding home with his family. But the family is an illusion. The whole family group, except the boy, is revealed to be It. The pregnant mother in the family gives birth to a demon baby that apparently kills the boy off-screen. The pacifier flies out of the car window and into the sewers, where Pennywise resides in IT.
