Netflix is preparing a royal prequel. After the success of The Crown, which focused on the royal family of England from the time of Queen Elizabeth’s wedding in 1947 to the present problems of the Royals, the streamer is reportedly seeking a prequel. Although Netflix has said nothing public on the matter at this point, reports say the streamer has agreed to a £500 million, or roughly $681 million. The original show writer, Peter Morgan would return to write the prequel.
In a previous statement, Morgan confirmed that continuing the series into the present would be too difficult as the events, such as the death of Queen Elizabeth or the coronation of King Charles III, happened too soon to dramatize. He offered an alternative, “I might find some way of coming into it from a different way. If you go back in time, you always have that wonderful opportunity for metaphor. You can find a story in the past and tell that, and it [will] actually be a story about the present, but camouflage. And that, I think, might be a more elegant way forward."
If the deal goes through, the prequel will follow the royal family in 1901 with the death of Queen Victoria and is expected to end with the wedding that began The Crown.
