James Gunn’s Superman (2025) is reaching new heights; the film has officially become the top-earning superhero film of the year!  At a current global revenue of just over $600 million, not only does this surpass the competition, but it marks the first hero film to reach this milestone in 2025.  Looking more broadly, the film is the sixth-highest global earner for the overall year, coming in just under the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which reached about $626.54 million.

Marvel Studios was the primary competitor for Gunn and his cinematic reboot for the DC universe, as there is a lack of installments to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe this year.  Captain America: Brave New World (2025) had a global revenue of over $415.10 million, cementing it as the second-highest earning MCU film of the year.  Thunderbolts* (2025), which came out several months later, wrapped up its run with a global revenue of about $382.43 million; while this is the lowest-earning for Marvel, the film did seemingly surpass its budget expenses, which Forbes estimated to be between $150-200 million.  The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) is still wrapping up its theatrical run, but the film is currently sitting at a global revenue of over $475.16 million, making it the highest-earning Marvel film and the second-highest overall for the genre.  Gunn’s Superman (2025) ranked high in a genre struggling under superhero fatigue.

Things are coming to a close for the 2025 season of superhero films.  There are only a few remaining.  Macon Blair’s reboot of The Toxic Avenger will hit theaters on August 29, 2025.  Starring Peter Dinklage, the film follows a janitor who gets in an extremely unfortunate, transformative accident involving toxic materials, leading the man to create his own vigilante persona.  There is also a King Spawn film in the works at Blumhouse.  Updates on its development status have been few and far between; the film had a 2025 release window, but it may get pushed to 2026.

Superman (2025) was released on July 9 of this year.  It is the first film installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of James Gunn’s DC reboot.  The film is expected to be available on HBO Max at the end of September 2025.
